― 二週間前のこと ―
日本で 一番小さく
日本で 一番早く輝く ホタルの
美しい灯を 見たくて
今年も 小さな 島に行った
体長が わずか２～４ミリという
ホタルの名は
― ヤエヤマヒメボタル ―
その灯は
命を燃やしているように
切なく 美しい
夜の帳が降りるころに
そっと 舞い始め
やがて
何千という乱舞になると
わたしの心は 焦がされそうになる …

- Two weeks ago…
I went to a small island again this year to see the beautiful glow of the smallest and earliest fireflies in Japan.
The name of this firefly, which is only 2 to 4 millimeters long,
is the Yaeyama firefly.
Their lights are as beautiful and poignant as if they were burning with life.
The fireflies begin to dance softly and gently as the evening light falls,
When they start to dance softly at night,
and then thousands of them appear,
my heart is almost burnt by their lights…
