―　一週間前の出会い　―
岡山県の　大垪和西の棚田に　
呼ばれた
初めて訪れると
そこには　人形のような案山子が　
何体も佇んでいた
ひとつひとつが丁寧に作られた　案山子は
じっと　眼下の棚田と　集落を見つめていた

けれども　後継者不足によって　
棚田には　いくつもの休耕田が　うまれていた
それを見つめる案山子の後姿は
どこか　悲しげであった　…

― An Encounter a Week Ago ―
I was drawn to the terraced rice fields
of Oohaganishi in Okayama Prefecture.
Upon my first visit,
several scarecrows, doll-like in appearance,
stood there.
Each scarecrow,
meticulously crafted,
gazed intently at the terraced fields
and the village below.

Yet due to a lack of successors,
many fallow fields had appeared among the terraces.
The backs of the scarecrows watching this
seemed somehow… sad.

“アートディレクター”の肩書で
活躍している　三村漢さん
彼が選んだ作品は
“ハッチョウトンボの逆立ち”だった

きらめく光に包まれて
鮮やかな赤いハッチョウトンボが
２センチの　逆立ちを見せている
色彩　光　そして　造形　
デザイナーの眼で
これらの要素を勘案しての　選択だったのだろう　…

The work he selected was “The Hachiyo Dragonfly’s Handstand”
Enveloped in sparkling light, a vivid red Hachiyo dragonfly performs a two-centimeter handstand
Color, light, and form
He likely chose it considering these elements through a designer’s eye…

佐藤裕香さんは
写真家・鈴木一雄の気配が
エゾジカの作品の中に濃厚に宿っている
この作品が　好きだと言った

生き物に興味を持っている
小学生の男の子は
羽がかっこいいという理由で
このミサゴの作品を選んだ

両方とも
写真展で初めて“いいね！”がついて
私も　嬉しい　…

Yuka Sato of Fujifilm Create
said she loves this work
because photographer Kazuo Suzuki’s presence
is deeply imbued within the Ezo deer piece.

A young boy in elementary school
who’s interested in living creatures
chose this osprey work
because he thought its wings looked cool.

For the first time at a photo exhibition,
two of my works got “likes!”
I’m happy too…

昨日は
写真家　山本学さんが
ギャラリートークのゲストだった
話し上手の彼とのコンビで行ったため
トークショーは
1時間30分という　最長記録となった

ちなみに
彼がもっとも好きだという作品は
「カジカが滝を登る作品」だった
　
この作品が最も好きだと表明したのは
伝説の“キャパ”元編集長の阿部庄之助さんに続いて
二人目だった　…

Yesterday
photographer Manabu Yamamoto
was the guest for the gallery talk.
Since we did the talk show
as a duo with him—a skilled conversationalist—
it ended up being
our longest session yet at one hour and thirty minutes.

Incidentally,
his favorite work
was “The Char Climbing the Waterfall.”
He was the second person
to declare this his favorite piece,
following the legendary former editor-in-chief of “CAPA,” Shonosuke Abe…

写真家の清家道子さんが
大分から駆けつけ
私との　ギャラリートークをしていただいた
話は盛り上がり
一時間を超える　トークショーとなった

ちなみに
清家道子さんが選んだ
もっとも好きな作品は
ノウサギが脱糞し
峠を降りて行った物語の　この作品だった

実は
彼女は今　家でウサギを飼っているという　…

Yesterday
photographer Michiko Seike
rushed over from Oita
to hold a gallery talk with me
The conversation flowed so well
it turned into a talk show lasting over an hour

Incidentally
the piece Michiko Seike chose
as her absolute favorite
was this one depicting a hare defecating
and descending the mountain pass
Actually
she mentioned she currently keeps rabbits at home…

昨日は　写真家の
竹下光士さんと　秦達夫(二度目)さんが
来場された

じっくりと鑑賞された後に
竹下さんは　死んだカブトムシの作品を

秦さんは　死んだイワナの作品を

選ばれた

二人とも
命を終えた　生きものに　魅了されたことに
何か　感慨深いものを　覚えた　…

Yesterday, photographers
Mr. Mitsushi Takeshita and Mr. Tatsuo Hata (second time)
visited the gallery.

After taking their time to view the works,
Mr. Takeshita chose a piece featuring a dead Japanese rhinoceros beetle,
and Mr. Hata selected a piece featuring a dead Japanese char.

I felt something profoundly moving
about how both men
were captivated by creatures that had ended their lives…

昨日
展示の飾り付けが終わった後に
スタッフの一人　下野さんが
『私は　この作品が気に入っています』と
言いにきてくれた

下野さんは“フォトアドバイザー”という肩書を持ち
隠岐の島には　数年通っているという
それでも
隠岐の島に暮らしている　半野生馬の
このような姿を見たことがない　という
私は
初対面の私の目の前で　転がって遊んでくれた
仔馬に　感謝している　…

※ 今日のギャラリートークも熱が入り　一時間に伸びてしまった

Yesterday,
after finishing the exhibition setup,
one of the staff members, Mr. Shimono,
came over to tell me,
“I really like this piece.”

Ms. Shimono holds the title of “Photo Advisor”
and has been visiting Oki Island,
where the horses in the artwork live,
for several years.
Even so,
he said
he had never seen the semi-wild horses of Oki Island like this before.
I am grateful to the foal
who rolled around and played right in front of me,
a complete stranger…

※ Today’s gallery talk got so passionate it ended up lasting an hour.

大阪展の初日は
たくさんの来場者で　賑わった
長年にわたり
私を応援してこられた方々は
今回の　生きものだけの内容に
とても驚かれたようだ

一方
多様な生きものをとらえた
テーマ性と作品内容には
たくさんの賛辞をいただくことができた

１５年の歳月を費やした苦労が　報われる思いだ　…

The opening day of the Osaka exhibition
was bustling with many visitors.
Those who have supported me over the years seemed quite surprised
by this exhibition’s focus solely on living creatures.

On the other hand,
the thematic approach capturing diverse living creatures
and the content of the works received numerous compliments.

It feels like the hardships of the past 15 years have finally paid off…

30センチを超える　大きなイワナが
滝つぼの水際に　横たわっていた
目が白くなっているのを見ると
命が尽きてから　長い時間が経過したのだろう
厳冬の　冷たい気温と水温の保冷効果で
腐らずに　身を横たえていた
この姿をいとおしいと思い　私はシャッターを切った
この思いが通じたのか
来場された斉田さんは
この作品が好きだ　と
言ってくれた　…

A large Japanese char over 30 centimeters
lay at the water’s edge of the waterfall pool.
Seeing its eyes turned white,
I realized a long time had passed since its life ended.
Preserved by the cold air and water temperature of the harsh winter,
its body lay there, unspoiled.
Finding this sight precious, I pressed the shutter.
Perhaps my feelings were conveyed,
for Mr. Saita, who visited,
said he liked this work…

いろいろな方に　好きな作品を伺っているが
おそらく　この作品が好きだというのは
この人しかいないのではないか　と
思う時がある
写真家の　栄馬智太郎さんは
エゾジカの頭蓋骨がある
この作品を　選んだ
彼は
「エゾイソツツジの花咲く下にある頭蓋骨の風景に魅了された」
と　述べた
華やかな“生”と沈黙の“死”との対比が
彼の琴線に触れたのだろう　…

I’ve asked many people about their favorite works,
but sometimes I think
this person might be the only one
who truly like this piece.
Photographer Tomotaro Ema
chose this piece
featuring an Ezo deer skull.
He stated,
“I was captivated by the scene of the skull beneath the blooming Ezo azaleas.”
The contrast between vibrant “life” and silent “death”
must have struck a chord with him…
