お姫様が　現れたことがある　…

はるか遠い　若かりし頃
私は
朝霧の中で　桜とナノハナが咲き乱れる
夢心地の光景を　描いていた

“お嫁さんが欲しいなぁ”
と　思っていた時期かどうかは定かではないが
ファインダーの中に
いきなり　お姫様が現れた　…

a princess appeared in the viewfinder of my camera …

When I was a young man,
far away,
I was painting a dreamy scene of cherry blossoms and nanohana blooming
in the morning mist.

but a princess suddenly appeared in the viewfinder of my camera …

二日前は　私のホームグランドともいえる
山形県小国町の　フォトコンテストの審査だった
新幹線のトラブルで
小国町に到着したのは　4時間遅れの　夕方5時
なんとか審査を終え　町長さんたちとの懇親会が終わると
―　爆睡　―　
翌朝（昨日）に目が覚めると　見事な銀世界に　鼓動が高鳴った
宿の脇は　久しぶりの積雪3ｍ超えだ
しばらく　夢のような白い世界を　見つめ続けた
ゆっくりしていたいが　
夕方には　銀座で打ち合わせがあるために　東京に向かう
日本を代表する銀座の老舗　吉井画廊にて
オーナーの吉井さんを囲み
　小松健一　林義勝　山岸伸　そして私の写真家四人で
合同写真展の開催について　打ち合わせを行った
さらに　飲み屋に繰り出し　写真談義を繰り広げた　
朝は静寂なる豪雪の中　夜は華やかな銀座　…
―　すべてが　夢のような一日だった　―

Two days ago, I was judging a photo contest in Oguni-cho, Yamagata Prefecture, which is my home ground.
Due to a problem with the bullet train, I arrived in Oguni-machi at 5:00 p.m., four hours late.
After the judging and the reception with the mayor, I fell asleep.　
When I woke up the next morning (yesterday), my heart was pounding with excitement at the sight of a beautiful silver world.
The side of the inn was covered with more than 3 meters of snow for the first time in a long time!
I kept staring at the dreamy white world for a while.
I wanted to relax, but I had a meeting in Ginza in the evening, so I headed to Tokyo.
At the Yoshii Gallery, one of Japan’s most famous and well-established galleries in Ginza, Kenichi Komatsu, Yoshikatsu Hayashi, Shin Yamagishi, and I had a meeting with the owner, Mr. Yoshii, to discuss a joint exhibition of our photographs.
Afterwards, we went out to a bar and talked about photography.　
I was in the quiet heavy snow in the morning and in the glamorous Ginza at night …
- All in all, it was a dreamlike day.

白鳥が　走る
水の上を　軽快に走る
飛びあがるために　7～8メートルほどを　走る
じっと見ていると
足運びは　まるで　人間のようだ
横一列でスタートする
短距離競争に　見えてしまう
この走りと
優雅に飛翔する姿との　ギャップが
微笑ましい

Swans run.
Swans run swiftly over the water.
They run about about 7 to 8 meters to fly up.
If you watch closely,
their gait is like that of a human being.

古代ローマの遺跡のような
優雅な11連のアーチが
糠平湖に　ある
86年前に造られた
長さ130メートル　高さ10メートルの
この橋梁は
タウシュベツ川橋梁と　呼ばれる
渇水期の時期だけ　
湖面に姿を現す　この橋梁は　
風化が進み
いつ崩壊しても　不思議ではない
崩れ落ちる前に　一目見ようと
多くの観光客が　毎日のように　訪れる
これまで　
アイスバブルを撮りながら
遠くから眺めていた私だったが　
初めて　間近で　シャッターをきった

Eleven graceful arches, like the ruins of ancient Rome,
are located at Lake Nukabira.
The 130-meter-long, 10-meter-high bridge, built 86 years ago,
is called the Tausubetsu River Bridge.
The bridge,
which only appears on the lake during the drought season,
is so weathered that it could collapse at any time.
Many tourists visit the bridge every day
to catch a glimpse of it before it collapses.
I had been watching from afar while taking pictures of the ice bubble,
but this was my first time to take a close-up shot of the bridge.

湖の中に
すてきな氷の彫刻が　展示されている
だが
この芸術作品は
そう簡単に　見ることは　できない
凍える寒さの中で　雪の下に眠る
氷中都市を　探し当てなければならない
勘を頼りに　雪を掘り続ける
ようやく探し当てた後は
氷を磨かなければ　ならない
けれども
あまりの寒さに　氷はすぐに曇ってしまう
曇っては磨き　曇っては磨きを繰り返しながら
シャッターを　きる
朝日が射し込んだ時　絶景が現れた　…

On a windless,
skin-achingly cold morning,
a miracle blooms on the ice.

Suddenly,

I have greeted the first sunrise of the year
at 17 different places around Japan

Whenever I see the sunrise on New Year’s Day,
my heart is always solemn.

Mt Fuji, in particular,
is a special memory for me.

When I saw the mountain’s shape as if spiritual energy was gushing from its peak,
and the sun emerging from its base,
I was so excited …
