極寒の　季節
大地は　雪で覆われ
木々は　氷で覆われる
氷雪の　世界
けれど
どれほど過酷な　環境でも
“ヒカリ”がある限り
希望は　生まれる　…

It’s a bitterly cold season,
as if everything is frozen.
The earth is covered with snow,
the trees are covered with ice,
a world of ice and snow.
But no matter how harsh the environment,
as long as there is “light,” hope is born.

日本ではなく　地中海という
清楚な佇まいなのに
花ことばは　“うぬぼれ”“自己愛”という
意外なことが多いが
私は
この花が　好きだ
厳しい冬に
凛として咲く　この花が　好きだ
暗い　冬の日本海側で
珍しい夕日が現れると
花たちは　その光をまとって
それはそれは　麗しい姿となり
私は　恋に落ちたかのように
胸が　あつくなる…

Japanese narcissus is not from Japan
but from the Mediterranean Sea.
Although the flower has a neat appearance,
its flower word is “conceitedness” and “self-love”.
I like this flower though there are many unexpected things about it.
I like this flower that blooms with dignity in the harsh winter.
When a rare sunset appears on the Japan Sea side in the dark of winter,
the flowers are truly beautiful in its light.
It makes my heart warm as if I had fallen in love…

夜中に　咲き始めた　氷の花
“フロストフラワー”は　
氷点下20度に冷え込んだ　夜明け前に
大きく花開いた
ときめきながら　描き続けていると
雄阿寒岳に　たなびく雲が
朝焼けに　化粧された
それが　静かな湖面にも映り込み
絶景と　なった

Frostflowers,” the icy flowers that began blooming in the middle of the night, blossomed before dawn when the temperature dropped to 20 degrees below zero.
I was thrilled as I photographed them.
The clouds fluttering over Mt. Oakan are tinted with the color of the morning glow, as if they had been made up.
The reflection of the clouds on the calm surface of the lake made for a spectacular view.

東日本大震災の発生から
12年目を
迎える
悲劇の発生直後の　春には
せめてもの慰めにと
桜の写真集を　配りながら
五か所ほどの避難所を　訪問した
けれども
私の故郷の　福島は
今なお　傷が癒えていない
メルトダウンした原子力発電所から
およそ37キロに位置する　
波立海岸で
祈りを捧げながら
初日の出を　描いたのを
今日も　思い出す

We are now in the 12th year
since the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.
In the spring immediately after the tragedy,
I visited about five evacuation centers,
distributing photo albums of cherry blossoms as a consolation prize.
But my hometown,
Fukushima, has not healed.
On Hattachi Beach,
about 37 kilometers from the melted down nuclear power plant,
I prayed and painted the first sunrise of the year.
I remember today,
as I prayed,
photographing the first sunrise of the year.

quiet time flows
A gentle scene appears,
as if the light has stopped.
The sound of the wind ceases,

蒼い　しじまが　訪れる
滝の流れは　音を消し
落ち葉は　ぴたりと　張り付き
水面は　揺らぎを　止める

シャッターの響きさえも　
一瞬にして　吸い込まれる　…

As autumn ends
and the day draws to a close,
the pale stillness arrives.
The sound of the cascading waterfalls fades away,
the fallen leaves are firmly attached to the bedrock,
and the surface of the water stops shimmering.
In the pale stillness,
even the sound of the shutter
is instantly absorbed …

山小屋も閉まり
誰もいなくなった　尾瀬ヶ原に
雪が　降りつづいた

だが　その夜には　
満天の星空となり
大気は　急激に　冷え込んでいった

翌朝
湿原に　ひとり佇む　私の眼前に
奇跡の　光景が　現れた
池塘は　一夜にして氷に閉ざされ
大気には　霧が満ち
太陽は　和紙に包まれたように
ぼうっと　やわやかな光を　放つのだった　

神々しい　自然界の姿に
わたしの感激の涙が　こぼれそうになった　…

―　One day in early November　―
The mountain lodge was closed,
and snow continued to fall on the empty Ozegahara.

That night, however,
the sky was full of stars and the air cooled rapidly.
The next morning,
as I stood alone in the marshland,
a miraculous sight appeared before my eyes.
The pond was frozen over overnight,
the air was filled with fog,
and the sun was shining softly as if wrapped in Japanese paper.　

I was almost moved to tears
by this divine sight of the natural world …

薄暗いベールに覆われた　
眼下の　晩秋の情景を
目を凝らして　
見つめた

やがて
私の目の網膜に
秋を満喫した
湖岸の　木立が　現れた

奏でていた

水の中では
すでに命を失っている　木々たちが
声なき声の　バックコーラスを
歌っていた

- Before the dawn
I stared at the dimly lit late autumn landscape below me, my eyes straining to see.

Soon, a grove of trees on the shore of a lake appeared on my retina, enjoying the autumn season.

The grove was playing the changing of the season with a few autumn leaves.

In the water, the trees, already lifeless, sang a silent back chorus Singing

It was a sad chorus

―　一週間前のこと　―
あまりにも　ご無沙汰している
ブナの森の長老から
“そろそろ会いに来ないか”と
懐かしい声で　お呼びがかかった

いそいそと　参上すると
森の中の　主の姿は
遠目からも
一目で　　わかった

以前にもまして
体は　苔で覆われ
美しい木肌も　自慢の太い枝も　
ほとんど失われていた

けれども
上を見上げると
色づいた葉を　少しばかり　纏っていた
必死で　生きている証を　私に見せてくれた…

― A week ago　―
I felt as if an elder in the beech forest, whom I had not seen for a long time,
called out to me in a familiar voice, “It’s about time you came to see me.”

I rushed off to see him.
I recognized the Lord’s figure in the forest at a glance, even from a distance.

More than ever before, the Lord’s body was covered with moss.
His beautiful bark and the thick branches of which he was so proud were almost
gone.

But when I looked up, the Lord was clad in a little bit of colored leaves on his
body.
The Lord showed me proof that He was desperately trying to live…
