数日前
小学生の女の子二人　と　ご両親が
写真展会場に　来られた
四人は 一時間半ほど
じっくりと　鑑賞された

見終わったころに
気に入った作品を
聞かせていただいた

お父さんは
ＤＭに使用された　ブナ林の光芒が　
一番好きだと　いわれた
小学生の　二人は
それぞれ　好きな作品を10作品以上も
書いてくれた
姉妹でも　好みはかなり　違っていた
意見が一致したのは
菊池渓谷の　晩秋の作品だった
そして　それは
お母さんも一番好きな作品だと言う

好きな理由を　尋ねると
妹は
“沈んでいる葉っぱが魚のようだから”
と　答えた
そして　お母さんは
“流れている水が寒天のようだから”
と　話した

思いがけない　お二人の答えに
私は　ドキッとした
あらためて
感受性の多様性を　実感した

A few days ago, two elementary school girls and their parents came to the exhibition hall.
They spent an hour and a half looking at the works.

When they had finished,
I asked them which was their favorite work.

The father said he liked the glow of the beech forest used in the DM the best.
The two sisters, both elementary school students, each wrote more than 10 works of their favorite
Even the sisters had very different tastes.
The one that they agreed on was the one I uploaded this time, which was taken in late autumn in Kikuchi Valley.
And they said it was their mother’s favorite work.

When I asked her why she liked the piece, she said
“Because the sunken leaves look like fish,” she replied.
And her mother said, “Because the flowing water looks like agar.

I was thrilled by their unexpected answers.
Once again, I realized the diversity of sensitivity.

【The Combustion of Life】
Unlike Genji firefly,
Hime firefly blink once every 0.5 seconds.
Like the famous song “Bolero”,
it keeps flashing repeatedly with a mysterious charm.
For about a week,
their tiny bodies do their best to shine
until their bright lives run out.

「この花は何ですか」
という質問を　
開催中の写真展『聲をきく』の会場で
時々受ける

「“サガリバナ”　という花です　
沖縄で　夜にだけ咲く　わずか半日の命の花です　
この作品は　夜明け前に川面に散っている様子です」
と　私は説明する

人知れずに　そっと咲き
そっと　この世から去っていく

この作品を見つめながら
“しあわせとは何か”を
ふと　考えさせられる

永遠に　答えは出ないが　
多様性があるのは　確かだ

I am sometimes asked the question,
“What is this flower?

「It is a flower called “Sagaribana”.
It is a flower that blooms only at night in Okinawa and lasts only half a day.
This work shows them scattered on the surface of the river before dawn,」
I explain.

Blooming softly without people’s knowledge and quietly leaving this world
As I gaze at this work of art,
I suddenly think about what “happiness” means.

The answer will never come,
but it is certain that there is diversity.

横殴りの　風が強い
吹雪の中で
小さな　マヒワという　小鳥たちが
必死に　朝食を　とっている
撮影したのは　およそ30年前
作品として　初めて　発表したのは　2004年
そして　今
18年の時を経て
今回の写真展に　よみがえらせた
不思議なことに
81点もある　展示作品の中で
この作品が一番好き　
という人が　２～３人　あらわれた
そして　ついに
この作品を購入してくれる
女性の方が　現れた
私は　戸惑いながらも　うれしい

In the midst of a blizzard with strong sideways winds,
small mahiwa birds are desperately having breakfast.
It was about 30 years ago that I took this photograph,
and I first published it as a work of art in 2004.
Now, 18 years later,
I have revived them for this exhibition.
Strangely enough, among the 81 exhibited works,
two or three people said they liked this work the best.
And finally,
a woman came forward to purchase a copy of this work.
I was puzzled,
but happy.

桧原湖に棲む
たくさんのブラックバスから　
必死で　逃げ回り　
わずかな確率で　生き延びる

やがて　渓流を遡上し
産卵を終え　命をまっとうできた
ワカサギが　いた

私は　感動のあまり
ワカサギに　そっと触れ
その冷たい感触が残る　指で
シャッターを　きり続けた

After desperately running away from the many black bass that live in Lake Hibara, they finally have a small chance of surviving

Eventually, there were a Japanese pondsmelt that had made it up the mountain stream, finished spawning, and were ready to live out their lives!

I was so moved that I gently touched the Japanese pondsmelt and continued to click the shutter with my finger, which still felt cold to the touch.

6月に入ると
尾瀬の湿原の　あちらこちらでは
黄色い小さな　花たちが　
かわいい笑顔を　振りまいている

花の名前は　“リュウキンカ”という

見つけた私も　
思わず　笑顔になってしまう
なぜならば
リュウキンカの花言葉は
―　必ずくる幸せ　―
なのだから　…

In June,
little yellow flowers are sprinkled with cute smiles here and there
in the marshlands of Oze.

The name of the flowers is “Ryuukinka”.

I can’t help but smile when I see them.
Because in the language of flowers,
Ryuukinka means “Happiness that will surely come”…

四日前の　風薫る日に
私は
久しぶりに　黒沢峠を歩いた

苔むした石畳の道を見つめるたびに　
苦難の道を歩いた　古の旅人の姿が　
朧げながら　脳裏に浮かんだ

黒沢峠を含む越後十三峠は
イギリスの女性旅行家　イザベラバードが
144年前に旅したことで　特に有名だ

けれども　私には
どれほどの旅人が　人生をかけて　
この石畳を　必死に歩いたか
その足音が
耳奥に響いて　止まなかった

Four days ago with a balmy breeze,
I walked along the Kurosawa Pass for the first time in a long time.

Whenever I gazed at the moss-covered stone-paved road,
the image of ancient travelers who walked the hardship path vaguely flashed in my mind.

The Thirteen Passes on the Echigo Highway, including the Kurosawa Pass,
is particularly famous for being traveled 144 years ago
by a British woman traveler, Isabella Bird.

But I could not stop the sound of their footsteps echoing in the back of my ears,
as I wondered how many travelers had spent their lives desperately walking along these cobblestone paths.

5月下旬　
尾瀬ケ原の　雪が　
ようやく　すべて　融けた

－　高層湿原が　目覚めるときだ　―

ここでは
枯れた植物も　完全に腐ることはない
泥炭となり
1年に1mm弱ほど　湿原の厚みとなる

－　はたして　自分の　こころの厚みは　…　－

そう思いながら　目の前の　湿原を見つめる

Late May,
all the snow in Ozegahara has finally melted.

－ It is time for the high marshland to awaken.　－

Here, even dead plants do not completely rot.
They become peat, and the marsh becomes thicker by less than 1mm per year.

- I wonder how thick my heart is…

I stare at the marshland in front of me with this thought in my mind.

山地や深山の林床に
ひっそりと咲き誇る
―　ヤマシャクヤク　―
高額で取引されるために
盗掘が　後を絶たないという
全国各地に存在していた自生地は　
ほとんど　失われてきている
あるがままに　咲かせてあげたいのに…
あるがままに　見つめていたいのに…

The flowers of the mountain peony bloom quietly
on the forest floor in mountainous areas and deep in the mountains.
Because this flower is traded at a high price,
it is said that there is no end to the pilfering of this flower.
The native habitats that once existed throughout Japan have been almost entirely lost.
Even though we want to let them bloom as they are …
I wish I could just stare at it as it is …

かくしてそ　人は死ぬといふ　藤波の　ただ一目のみ　見し人ゆゑに
（万葉集より、詠み人知らず）
（意訳）　こうして人は死ぬというのでしょうか。ただ一度だけ見たフジの花のような美しいあの人に恋して…。

フジの花は、古くから私たち日本人に慕われてきた。万葉集には26首も詠われている。それにしてもこの歌からは、現代では考えられないほど純情で、一途な男の恋心が伝わってくる。はたして、私には、…。（※　“藤波”は、フジの花が波のように揺れるのを表現した言葉という）

Is this how people die? Falling in love with that person who is as beautiful as a Fuji flower seen only once….

Fuji(Wisteria) blossoms have long been adored by the Japanese people. The Manyoshu (Anthology of Myriad Leaves) contains 26 poems about them. This poem, however, conveys the pure-hearted and single-minded love of a man that would be unthinkable today. I wonder….
