I could hear the cheers in the distance, celebrating “New Year’s Day.”
I continued to stare at the sea, which was blending into the star-filled sky.
The changing of the seasons in a year is like the life of a human being, isn’t it?
The dawn of New Year’s Day marks the beginning of the year, and at the same time, it is like the first light we experience at birth.
To me, the torii gate standing on the shore looks like the hieroglyphic character for “opening.

水の中には
クロサンショウウオの卵　と
モリアオガエルの赤ちゃんが　いる

それらを隠すかのように　水面に鏡が貼られた

A small swamp hidden in a virgin beech forest.

In the water, there are the eggs of the Japanese black salamander and the babies of the forest green tree frogs

As if to hide them, the water surface became like a mirror.
In addition, flower petals of the gray’s chokecherry were scattered.

そう呼ばれるには
千年以上の時間を　生き抜かなければならない

一般的な杉の寿命は　およそ500年
その二倍を生き抜いて　
屋久島では　初めて
一人前の“杉”　と　認められる

だから
一本一本の屋久杉には
千年以上の時間が　宿り
見事な風貌　が　形成されている

願わくば　
私たちの年輪も　
もっと自信と尊厳が　得られるように　…

In order to be called “Yakusugi” in this island, it must survive for more than a thousand years.

The life span of a typical cedar is about 500 years.
If a cedar survives twice that long, it is recognized as a full-fledged “cedar” for the first time in Yakushima.

As a result, each Yakusugi cedar has more than a thousand years of time attached to it, forming a magnificent appearance.

The morning mist fills the forest, and small light purple flower fairies dance silently in the air.
The name of the fairies is ― Renge Shoma　―.

They always dance with a shy, downcast look.

I really wanted to see the faces of the fairies, so I painted them as if I were looking up at them from below.

毎年　夏の夜空を飾る　神秘的な天体ショー
―　　ペルセウス座流星群　―

今年は、８月１３日の夜明けにピークを迎えることになっていた。
だが、天候が崩れる予報だったため、
私は、１１日の夜明け前に撮影することにした。
向かったのは、福島県にある私の生まれ故郷の隣村。
ここは、今は亡き父の生まれ故郷であり、
小さな天文台（画面右下。※）があるほど、星空が美しい所だ。

天の川を配置した画面構成で撮っていると、
時折、ペルセウスの流れ星が、手を振るように姿を見せてくれた。

私の発表作品は、カメラ内合成を含め、一切の合成は行っていない。
あくまでリアルな一発撮りにこだわっているため、
出来上がる作品は、決して華やかなものとはいえないかもしれない。
それでも私は、
自分が記憶した光景の再現に、十分に満足している。

【Perseid Meteor Shower】
A mysterious celestial show that decorates the night sky every summer.
―　The Perseid meteor shower　―

This year, it was supposed to peak at dawn on August 13.
But the weather was forecast to break.
I decided to shoot before dawn on the 11th.
I headed to a neighboring village of my birthplace in Fukushima Prefecture.
This is the hometown of my late father, and it is a place where the starry sky is so beautiful that there is a small observatory (bottom right of the screen;※).

When I was shooting with the Milky Way in the screen, the Perseus shooting star occasionally appeared, waving its hand in the air.

I did not use any compositing, including in-camera compositing, in any of my photographs.
I’m sticking to realistic single shots, and as a result, my work may not be as spectacular as my composite works.

Nevertheless, I am fully satisfied with my recreation of the scenes I remembered.

As I stared at the shore of the swamp, I felt as if these fragments were swaying, playing a peaceful melody.

ウミガメの赤ちゃんは
すくすく　育った

およそ二カ月後
殻を破って　砂の中から這い出る

四つん這いで　必死に追う

A baby sea turtle grew up in an egg buried in the sand.

About two months later, the babies break out of their shells and crawl out of the sand.
They head out to sea at a fast pace to avoid being attacked by their natural enemies.

Even though they are small and fresh out of the egg, they are really fast.

I crawl on all fours and frantically chase after it.
As I clicked the shutter, I wished him “Good luck! I cheered.
