私は、自然写真家として、
数多くの被写体を撮り続けている。
その中でも「桜」は特別な存在であり、
永遠のテーマになっている。
私の撮影姿勢は、
「呼ばれたときに会いに行き、その時の姿を撮らせてもらう」である。
“呼ばれる”とは、
ふっと脳裏にうかんだり、その地の知人から連絡があったり、
ネットニュースで偶然目にしたり、と様々だ。
さらには、
信じてもらえないような不思議な呼ばれ方も、けっこうある…。
開花情報や天候を気にしては失礼にあたるので、
私は、呼ばれたときに会いに行くように努めている。
すると、出会う桜の表情は、本当に様々だ。
まだ蕾（つぼみ）のときもあれば、二分咲きや三分咲きのときもある。
散り始めのこともあれば、ほとんど散ってしまったこともある。
それでも、会いに行くと必ずご褒美がもらえる。
この作品は、
久しぶりに身延山から呼ばれて出かけた時のもの。
雨の中、花ほころぶすてきな姿を、　
私に披露してくれた。

※　この桜は“シダレザクラ”。自生種の“エドヒガン”から突然変異として生まれたものが、栽培品種として全国に広まったものとされている。

As a nature photographer, I have been taking pictures of many subjects.
Among them, “cherry blossoms” have a special place in my heart and are an eternal theme.
My approach to photography is to “go and see them when I am called upon, and let me photograph them as they are.
What I mean by “called” is that it may come to my mind suddenly, or I may be contacted by an acquaintance in the area, or I may happen to see it on the Internet news.
In addition, there are many mysterious ways to be called that you may not believe…
It would be rude to worry about the blooming information or the weather, so I try to go see them when I am called.
The cherry blossoms that I encounter have a variety of expressions.
Sometimes they are still in buds, sometimes they are in second or third bloom.
Sometimes they are just beginning to fall, and other times they have almost fallen.
Still, when I go to see them, I am always rewarded.
This work was done when I was called out from Minobusan after a long absence.
She showed me her beautiful, just-begun blooms in the rain.

※　This cherry tree is a weeping cherry. It is said to have been born as a mutation of the native species “Edohigan” and then spread nationwide as a cultivated variety.

２０１８年３月１３日、ネットニュースを見ていた私は衝撃を受けた。何と、およそ１００年ぶりに自生種の桜の新種が発見され、“クマノザクラ”と命名されたという。桜をこよなく愛する私には、本当に驚きだった。何しろ、園芸種の桜はおよそ６００種類あるのに対して，日本の自生種の桜はわずかに９種類（沖縄のカンヒザクラを自生種と認める学説では１０種類）しか存在していない。“クマノザクラ”は、熊野川流域を中心として広く分布しているらしい。これまでヤマザクラと思われていたものが、今回の詳しい調査の結果、あらためて新種と判明したという。
　原稿執筆などの立て込んでいた仕事を終えて、私がようやく東京を出発できたのが２２日の夜だった。翌朝、私は、和歌山県古座川町にあるクマノザクラの標本木（認定されただひとつの個体）の桜を、胸を熱くしながら見つめていた。かなり散ってはいたが、花色や葉の形などのクマノザクラの特徴をひとつずつじっくり確認することができた。
　そのあと、三重県熊野市の丸山千枚田へと急いだ。標高の高いあの地域ならば、クマノザクラはほぼ満開と予測したからだ。期待通り桜は見事に咲き誇っていたが、意外なことに誰一人いなかった。世紀の大発見というのにどうしたことか、不思議だった。おかげで私は、クマノザクラかヤマザクラかの識別を行いながら（地元の人も、まだどれがクマノザクラか断定できないため）、二日間にわたって心ゆくまでシャッターをきることができた。
そのときの作品数点は、翌年2019年に写真展「サクラニシス」、写真集「サクラニイキル」で発表した全国の桜作品の中に収録した。そして、特に気に入ったこのクマノザクラ作品は、写真展ＤМの写真として使用した。昨年に立ち寄った時、熊野市が作成した“クマノザクラめぐりマップ”の中で、私がＤМに使用した桜が“紀和町のクマノザクラのシンボルツリー”と紹介されているのを知った。私は、嬉しかった。

On March 13, 2018, I was watching the online news and was shocked. For the first time in about 100 years, a new species of native cherry tree has been discovered and named the “Kumano cherry”. As a great admirer of cherry blossoms, I was really surprised. While there are about 600 horticultural species of cherry trees, there are only nine species of native cherry trees in Japan (10 according to the theory that recognizes Taiwan cherry in Okinawa as a native species). “Kumano cherry” is said to be widely distributed mainly in the Kumano River basin. The cherry tree, which had been thought to be a conventional mountain cherry, was found to be a new species as a result of the detailed research.
I was finally able to leave Tokyo on the night of the 22nd, after finishing the manuscript and other busy work. The next morning, I was looking at a specimen tree of the Kumano cherry tree (the only one certified as such) in the town of Kozagawa, Wakayama Prefecture, with a burning desire in my heart. Although it was quite scattered, I was able to carefully check the characteristics of the Kumano cherry, such as flower color and leaf shape, one by one.
　After that, I hurried to the rice terraces in the Maruyama district. in Kumano City, Mie Prefecture. I predicted that the Kumano cherry trees would be in full bloom in that high altitude area. As expected, the cherry blossoms were in full bloom, but surprisingly, no one was there. I wondered what had happened to this great discovery of the century. Thanks to this, I was able to take pictures to my heart’s content for two days while trying to identify the Kumano cherry or wild cherry trees (At that time, even the locals couldn’t determine which one was the Kumano cherry).
I included some of my work from that time in the following year, 2019, in the photography exhibition “Sakuranisys” and the photo book “Sakuraniikiru”. And the kumano cherry works that I particularly liked were used as photos for the exhibition DМ. When I dropped by last year, I found out that the cherry tree I used for the DМ was introduced as “the symbolic tree of the Kumano cherry in Kiwa Town” in the ” Kumano cherry Tour Map” prepared by the city. I was so happy.

母が生存していた時、実家の小さな庭先には、母に育てられた季節のいろいろな花々がきれいに咲き誇っていた。冬を迎える頃は、母は寒さに弱い花の球根などを鉢に植え替えて居間に並べていた。それほど広くない居間は花の鉢で窮屈になってしまったが、母は時折水を差しながらやさしい視線を落としていた。
母は、とりわけフクジュソウの花が好きだった。大きな紫色の鉢にはたくさんのフクジュソウが植えられていた。春がくると庭先に植え替えられ、いつも輝くような黄金色の花を咲かせ、私たちを楽しませてくれた。３０年ほど前の正月に母が亡くなったとき、実家の居間には相変わらずたくさんの鉢が残っていた。私たち三人の兄弟は、フクジュソウを株分けしてそれぞれ持ち帰った。しかし残念ながら、数年後には三人ともそのフクジュソウを枯らしてしまった。私は、その痛恨の思いをいまでも引きずっている。

When my mother was still alive, the small garden of my parents’ house was filled with various seasonal flowers that she had nurtured and beautifully bloomed. When winter came, my mother would plant flower bulbs that were sensitive to the cold in pots and arrange them in the living room. The living room, which was not very spacious, became cramped with flower pots, but my mother kept a gentle eye on them as she watered them.
My mother was particularly fond of amur adonis flower. In a large purple pot, there were a lot of amur adonis. When she passed away about 30 years ago in January, there were still many pots left in the living room of my parents’ house. We three brothers shared the amur adonis flowers and brought them home. But unfortunately, we let those flowers die after a few years. I still carry that painful feeling with me today.

この作品は、私が毎年会いに出かける、
4月末の景色です。
本当に夢のような世界ですが、
今回、一足早く紹介します。
ここは、日本有数の豪雪地、山形県小国町です。
30年ほど前に、東北を巡っている時に出会い、
それ以来、飯豊連峰と朝日連峰に囲まれたこの町に惚れこみました。
過疎化に悩むこの町のまちづくりを支援しながら、
2006年には、
写真集・写真展（タイトルは“おぐにの聲”）で発表しました。
素朴な宿の、
すばらしい温泉に入りながら、
残雪の春景色を堪能するだけで、
私はとても幸せになります。
みなさんも、ぜひ一度、…。

This work is the view at the end of April, when I go out to see them every year.
It really is a dreamlike world.
This time, I would like to introduce it to you a little earlier.
This is Oguni Town in Yamagata Prefecture, one of the heaviest snowfall areas in Japan.
I first encountered this town when I was touring the Tohoku region about 30 years ago, and since then I have fallen in love with this town surrounded by the Iide and Asahi mountain ranges.
In 2006, I published a photo book and an exhibition titled（The whisper of Oguni） while supporting the town’s development, which was suffering from depopulation.
Although there is no luxurious accommodation, I am very happy just to enjoy the spring scenery of lingering snow while bathing in the wonderful hot spring.

肌を刺すような冷たい大気にふれて、
十勝川の水面は凍り付き、次第に厚い氷に覆われる。
一度は凍った川面だが、
潮位の変化などで氷が砕けて、太平洋に流れ出る。
氷たちは押し寄せる波に揺られながら、
やがて砂浜に打ち上げられる。
それらの氷は海水でできた流氷とは違い、
透明で美しい輝きを放つ。
それゆえに、ジュエリーアイスと呼ばれる。

Winter, the season of silence….
Every once in a while, a mystical ice goddess appears.

For example, the “jewel ice”.
The surface of the Tokachi River freezes in the cold, stinging air, and eventually the river is covered with a thick layer of ice.

When the tide changes, the ice breaks up and flows out into the Pacific Ocean.
The ice is then washed up on the beach, rocked by the incoming waves.
Unlike ice floes made of seawater, these ice floes are transparent and shine beautifully.
This is why they are called “jewel ice.
