三百もの湖沼が生成され
裏磐梯は　風光明媚の地となった

けれども　その噴火では
四七七人の犠牲者が　出て
桧原湖の底には　
三つの集落が　沈んでいる

五色沼の　神秘的な色には
あまりにも悲しい歴史が
奥底まで　溶け込んでいる

On July 15, 1883, Mt. Bandai exploded.
As a result, about 300 lakes were created and Urabandai became a scenic tourist destination.

However, in that great eruption, 477 people were killed.
And three estates sank to the bottom of Lake Hibara.

The mysterious color of　Five Colored swamps is so sad that the history of the eruption is blended into the depths of the water.

天空の城として、
一躍有名になった“竹田城跡”。
一番の魅力は、
およそ580年前に築城された城の石垣が、
山頂にほぼそのままで現存していることだ。

映画「あなたへ」のロケで、
今は亡き高倉健さんが、ここを訪れている。
ロケの合間に、
絶景を眺めながら座っていた健さんのベンチが、
今なお、山頂（三の丸）に残されているという。
寡黙な健さんが、ひとり、
下界を見つめていた胸中やいかに…。

今回は、
少し離れた峠から、
朝霧の墨絵の世界に聳える、
天空の城を描いた。

The “Takeda Castle Ruins” became famous as a castle in the sky.
The most attractive feature is that the castle’s stone walls, which were built about 580 years ago
It is almost intact and extant on the summit.

The late Ken Takakura visited here during the filming of the movie “Anatae”.
Ken’s bench, where he used to sit between locations while gazing at the spectacular view, is said to be still standing on the top of the mountain.
I wonder what it must have felt like for the quiet Ken to gaze at the world below, alone.

This time, I painted the castle in the sky rising in the world of sumi-e in the morning fog from a remote mountain pass.

トキが　
ふわりと空中に浮かんだ時
その美しい羽の色に　
思わず　私はトキめいた

朱鷺色（ときいろ）とは、トキの羽の「少し黄みがかった淡くやさしい桃色」を指すらしい。この色の名は、トキがいたるところに生息していた江戸時代に生まれたという。

一時は“野生絶滅”に指定されたが、今では佐渡を中心におよそ350羽が生息している。だが、佐渡はけっこう広く、しかも刺激しないように車中からの撮影が求められている。納得できる作品を得るには、運と忍耐が必要だ。

As the crested ibis floated gently in the air, I couldn’t help but be struck by the beautiful color of its feathers.

Toki-iro refers to the “slightly yellowish, pale, gentle peach color” of the crested ibis’s feathers. The name “Toki-iro” is said to have originated in the Edo period, when the crested ibis was a ubiquitous inhabitant.

Once listed as “extinct in the wild,” there are now about 350 of them, mainly on Sado Island. However, Sado is quite large, and the birds must be photographed from inside a car so as not to provoke them. It will take luck and patience to get a satisfying result.

桜は、春を象徴する代表的な花だが、
桜には、秋から冬にかけて咲く品種もある。
“フユザクラ（冬桜）”“ジュウガツザクラ（10月桜）”“シキザクラ（四季桜）”、他…。

春の象徴的存在の桜、
秋の象徴的存在のモミジ、
両雄が並ぶ光景は、まさに夢の共演といえよう。

The cherry blossom is the typical flower that symbolizes spring, but there are also varieties of cherry blossoms that bloom in the fall and winter.
“Fuyuzakura (winter cherry blossom)”, “Jugatsuzakura (October cherry blossom)”, “Shikizakura (four seasons cherry blossom)”, etc…

The symbolic cherry blossoms of spring and the symbolic maple trees of autumn, the sight of both of them together is truly a dream come true.

私が、
初めて“白い虹”に出会ったのは、
尾瀬ヶ原であった。
そのときは、
まるで湿原の精霊を見たような感覚を覚えた。
尾瀬は、その後も私に、
白い虹に何度も出会う機会を与えてくれた。

七色の虹に出会ったとき、
私は、四葉のクローバーを見つけたようなしあわせな気分になる。
そして、
白い虹に出会ったときは、
何故か、
祈りを捧げたい気持ちが湧いてくる…。

The first time I saw a white rainbow.
It was in Ozegahara.
At that time,I felt as if I had seen the spirit of the marsh.
After that, Oze gave me many opportunities to see the white rainbow.

When I come across a rainbow of seven colors, I feel as happy as if I had found a four-leaf clover.
And when I came acrss a white rainbow, for some reason, I feel the urge to pray….

その日の朝は、
－15℃ほどに冷え込んでいた。
尾瀬の山小屋もほとんど閉まり、
湿原には誰もいない。

まだ薄暗い中で、
私はじっと　聲をきく。
蒼白く凍てついた　しじまの　聲をきく。

It was cold that morning,
with the temperature dropping to -15 degrees Celsius.
Most of the lodges on Ozegahara were closed and the marshland was empty.

I keep my mind still,
trying to listen to the whispers of silence .
I heard the whispers of the pale,
frozen world of nature.

鮮やかな紅葉を眺めていると
いきなり　雪が降ってきた
それから　見る見るうちに　吹雪となった
私は　
夢中で　シャッターをきり続けた
だが　こころは　
勝手に身体を離れて　舞っていた
踊りの苦手な　この私のこころが
吹雪の中で　一心不乱に　舞っていた

I was looking at the bright foliage.
Suddenly it was snowing.
And in the blink of an eye, I there was a blizzard.
I kept snapping the shutter of my camera frantically.
My heart, on the other hand, was dancing away from my body on her own accord.
I’m not much of a dancer, but my heart was dancing single-mindedly in the blizzard.

越後米沢街道“十三峠”（※）
どれほどの人が　この街道を行き交い
いかなる人たちが　難所で倒れたろうか

峠のひとつに
私が通う　黒沢峠がある　

ここには
樹齢四百年以上と思しき
ブナの巨木が　いる
三十年ほど前
初めて出会ったときは
大きな枝を　広げていた

朽ち果てた今でも　
その佇まいを見つめるたびに
ここで待ち合わせした
いろいろな人の　おぼろげな姿が　
脳裏に浮かぶ

Echigo-Yonezawa Kaido “Thirteen Pass”
How many people came and went on this road in the past?
How many people have been fallen at this difficult place?

In one of the thirteen passes.
There is a Kurosawa Pass where I go to shoot.　

There is a huge beech tree here that is over 400 years old.
When I first met it about 30 years ago, it was
It had spread its branches wide.

Now it’s rotten.　
Every time I stare at it.
It reminds me of the scene where people would have met up with this huge tree as a landmark in the past.

約500haもある広大な都井岬で

馬たちは人間に飼育されることなく

自由に生きている

彼らは日本在来馬の一種で “御崎馬”と呼ばれる

牡の平均寿命は約14年 　牝は約16年

馬たちは　海を臨むこの岬で生まれ この岬に死す

自分の一生の長さを はたして彼らはどう思っているのだろうか

On the vast 500-hectare Cape Toi

These horses are not raised by humans and live freely.

They are called “Misaki horses”, a type of horse native to Japan.

The average life span of a male is about 14 years and that of a female is about 16 years.

They are born on this cape overlooking the sea and die on this cape.

I wonder what they think about the length of their lives?

久しぶりに訪れた、ブナ原生林。
ブナの巨樹が林立する森の中で、
私は、大自然の圧倒的なリアリティを満喫する。

やがて、
緊張感から解放されるために、
ひとときの夢心地を求めたくなった。

森には、クロサンショウウオの棲む小さな沼がある。
水面をじっと見つめていると、すぐに夢の世界に入れる。
秋色を溶かした、とてもすてきな水鏡の世界…。

【Autumn-colored water mirror】

This is an old-growth beech forest that I hadn’t visited in a while.
In a forest lined with giant beech trees.
I enjoy the overwhelming reality of the great outdoors.

In time, I will
To get rid of the tension.
I was tempted to ask for a moment of dreaminess.

In this forest, there is a small swamp where the black salamander lives.
Gazing at the surface of the water, I soon found myself in a dream world.
It’s a beautiful world of water mirrors, dissolving the colors of autumn.
